About us

What We Do

Since 1985, the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association has been helping individuals and families deal with the effects of traumatic or acquired brain injury. Founded by families whose loved ones sustained brain injuries, the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association (SBIA) is a registered charity, registered under the Saskatchewan Non-Profit Corporations Act, which provides support and service free of charge to individuals and families who are living with the effects of acquired brain injury.

Each year, the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association reaches out to survivors, family members, and caregivers, offering:

  • Toll free number for individual calls by those seeking information or support.

  • Support for individuals and families coping with the effects of ABI.

  • Regular programs for survivors and their supporters in six cities.

  • Retreats to gather survivors and their supporters provincially to learn from each other and develop a community of support.

  • Educational programs for the public as requested.

  • Referrals to and support of peer Support Chapters in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw and Yorkton.

  • Prevention information and materials about acquired brain injury.

  • Brain injuries are reduced and there exists a provincial continuum of support informed by those with lived experience that encompasses all those affected by brain injury.

  • The Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association strives to prevent brain injuries and to improve the lives of brain injury survivors and their families

  • We value and believe in:

The dignity and self-worth of the individual with an acquired brain injury; their contribution and that of family members is valued

Sharing the lived experience; survivors and their families educating others about living with an acquired brain injury

Promoting connections for support, education and understanding

The value of group and individual support for individuals and families coping with effects of a brain injury; support and respite for families

Partnerships with other community organizations and governments to create and enhance services and programs for people with acquired brain injury

    Asset based approaches

  • For brain injury survivors and their families, local SBIA chapters offer free of charge, support groups and programs with assistance from SBIA staff and volunteers. Provincially organized fundraisers and retreats create collaborative opportunities to build a broader community of support.

History

SBIA relies on the generosity of donors and funds raised from fundraisers with the aim of preventing brain injuries and improving the lives of survivors and their families. With the help of sponsors, SBIA can continue to provide support to those affected by brain injuries and fund preventative initiatives to reduce the number of brain injuries.
